- Hydrostatic Testing is a commonly accepted approach to test pipelines. If a pipeline were to fail during testing with water, you essentially have a large water leak. That's because water isn't compressible like air or gas; its energy when released dissipates quickly.
- Water is commonly used because it is cheap and easily available and is usually harmless to the system to be tested.
- Pneumatic tests are potentially more dangerous than hydrostatic because of the higher level of potential energy.
- Pneumatic tests may be performed only when at least one of the following conditions exists:
- When pressure systems are so designed that they cannot be filled with water.
- When pressure systems are to be used in services where traces of the testing medium cannot be tolerated.
- If high pressure gas were used, then the gas would expand to V=(nRT)/p with its compressed volume resulting in an explosion, with the attendant risk of damage or injury. This is the risk which the testing is intended to mitigate.
